Why have a Charleston Water Week?

Surrounded by the tidal waters of the Ashley, Cooper, Wando and Stono rivers, Charleston is susceptible to heavy rains, storm surges, high tides and natural disasters. The Southeast is also the fastest growing region in the United States. Accelerated growth and development means increased stormwater runoff, increased pollution of our waterways and increased use of potable drinking water for uses such as irrigation and wastewater.

Charleston Water Week is a week-long program of free and public workshops that help raise awareness about water-related issues such as how to create and maintain a rain garden, how to properly maintain your boat to reduce your environmental impact and how to be water wise in your home. See Workshop Events for a complete listing of Water Week opportunities.

Who is Water Week's Headline Sponsor?

The Ashley Cooper Stormwater Education Consortium (ACSEC) is a partnership between local communities, universities, agencies and non-profits working together to implement a regional, watershed-scale education strategy in the Charleston tri-county region.  Through this collaborative approach, cooperating organizations are coordinating efforts to address the complex issue of stormwater runoff pollution, the greatest threat to the health of the nation’s waterways.  The mission of the ACSEC is to improve water quality within the Ashley and Cooper River basins by providing educational opportunities on stormwater impacts and our community roles in supporting healthy, fishable, and swimmable waterways.  Participating communities include the counties of Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester and the municipalities of Charleston, Folly Beach, Hanahan, Isle of Palms, Lincolnville, North Charleston, Sullivan’s Island, and Summerville.  For more information, visit Clemson’s Universities Carolina Clear webpage at http://www.clemson.edu/public/carolinaclear/
