Private Sector Honoree Award 2008
The Charleston Battery is well known for their talent on the field. What is less known about the Battery is what they have been doing off the field - wholeheartedly adapting sustainable initiatives and practices unique to their business plan. After commissioning an energy audit of their stadium facility from the Institute, the Battery independently implemented energy-saving measures on and off the field (literally).
Solar panels line a goal side of the stadium and help to power the office electrical needs and the field is upkept with organic fertilizers. Their concessions have omitted bottled water (instead providing free filtered water in recyclable cups), changed to recyclable paper products, and use 100% post-consumer recycled paper for print up of their programs, marketing products and office paper supply. In the Three Lions pub, all light bulbs (where possible) were switched to CFLs, HVAC equipment was programmed to power-saving devices, hand dryers and waterless urinals were installed in the restrooms. Other additions include a tankless water heater, energy-efficient printers, geothermal HVAC and an enhanced recycling program.
The Battery furthers their efforts by creating a situation of awareness and education for their fan-base. Their first annual Go Green Night in 2008 creates awareness for green businesses and non-profits in the area and the Battery's continual message to conserve, recycle and be more sustainable has resonated to a large fan base. The Institue is proud to give this award to a private sector company that has dedicated themselves to a sustainable purpose and we believe that they will become a leader for which other businesses will follow. |
