LOWCOUNTRY LOCAL FIRST
Public Sector Honoree Award 2008
With global economic change, globalization, off-shore industries and more recently, a global economic recession, Lowcountry Local First has become a vital organization to the Lowcountry. Their mission is to strengthen the local economy by enhancing community support for locally owned businesses and farmers. Over a year ago they partnered with the Coastal Conservation League and launched the Sustaianble Agriculture Initaitive which has helped develop three Community Supported Agricultural Programs (CSA's) with over 1000 shares sold to date. And through a partnership with the State Department of Agriculture, LLF has created a "Fresh on the Menu" program that enlists over 100 restaurants to commit to sourcing at least 25% of their menu locally.
LLF has developed the first Directory of Local Independent Businesses for the greater Charleston area (to be released at the end of this year) and their Buy Local Week in December helps raise awareness for local businesses, artisans and non-profits alike. In the short time the organization has been formed, LLF has accomplished a tremendous amount of work; developed a cult following and throw popular local events featuring restaurants throughout Charleston. In the short time the organization has been founded, LLF has accomplished significant work in the Lowcountry and the Institute is proud to be presenting the award for public sector to this organization. |
