TRAINING
The Energy Conservation Corps (ECC) hires workers from the same neighborhoods that the program is intended to serve. This allows local young adults to learn job skills specific to the weatherization of homes and use those skills to serve their own communities. By selecting young adults ages 18 – 25 an option outside of college or customer service is created. In many cases these young adults will pursue additional training after completing the ECC program to enhance their future employment opportunities. At this crucial age it is important that the ECC team members are developing skill sets that will broaden employment opportunities in their futures.
The training that Energy Conservation Corps members receive is geared toward developing a skill set that allows ECC team members to weatherize homes; sealing building envelopes and insulating unconditioned spaces to reduce the overall energy consumption of the home and the resulting utility expense of the homeowner. The ECC curriculum is based on the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) Envelope Professional Training manual. ECC members are trained in weatherization techniques and are certified by the Building Performance Institute (BPI) as Insulation and Air Sealing Technicians. The curriculum helps members to develop a general understanding of thermal dynamics and the properties that affect climate control in local homes. Members are trained to understand the key aspects of energy efficiency, climate control and effective measures to improve the overall indoor quality through proper air sealing and insulation.
