Grants Reinvesting Environmental Ethics in Neighborhood Sustainability

A joint program driven by the dedication of The Sustainability Institute and Lowcountry Earth Force to promote environmental awareness and better communities across the Lowcountry.

The GREENS Fund Program is a competitive grant award designed to encourage critical thinking and problem solving for some of today’s most pressing environmental issues and to foster a stronger environmental consciousness and sense of stewardship among youth and young adults. The GREENS Fund promotes these goals through education, project implementation, and community action.

The GREENS Fund awards grants for projects that:

  1. Address environmental conservation and preservation in an innovative way;
  2. Provide learning opportunities for the community and students alike; and
  3. Demonstrate environmental stewardship and sustainable development.

Thank You to all of our 2008 Major Donors

2008 WARRIOR WINNERS!

Wando Warriors Fight Global Warming One Tree At A Time

This year, the GREENS Fund Grant Award will go to Wando High School for their winning project proposal to address global warming and rising carbon levels “One Tree At A Time”. Wando science classes along with engineering and IT classes and the school’s resources department will construct and maintain a campus greenhouse in which to grow tree seedlings and assorted plants to be planted on campus and throughout the Charleston community. The greenhouse will be as much a class room as it will be a nursery for young trees and plants. The program will serve to educate over 3,000 students on the impacts of rising CO2 levels, methods of carbon sequestration, and raise awareness throughout the community on the many benefits of increased tree density and canopy cover in urban areas.

THE 2007 GREENS FUND

Last year a grant of $10,000 was awarded to James Island Charter High School to install a Green Wall. The installation included a grey water system, a variety of native species trees, shrubs and flowers, and a butterfly garden used to track monarchs. Project implementation was a great educational experience for the students involved and provided a lasting resource for the community and future students.
