G.R.E.E.N.S Fund Award Winners

WANDO HIGH SCHOOL, 2008

The 2008 GREENS Fund Award went to Wando High School for the construction of a campus greenhouse and school wide program to fight global warming “one tree at a time”. Michelle Powell’s science class submitted the winning project proposal to build the greenhouse that will be used to grow tree seedlings and assorted plants. The greenhouse will be as much a classroom as a nursery, used to teach horticulture and job skills. The program will serve to educate over 3,000 students and raise awareness throughout the community on the benefits of increased tree density and canopy cover in urban areas.

JAMES ISLAND CHARTER HIGH, 2007

The 2007 GREENS Fund Award went to James Island Charter High to install a Green Wall. The project included a rain garden, grey water capture, recycled glass pathway, a variety of native species shrubs and flowers, and a butterfly garden used to track monarchs. The Green Wall installation demonstrates a sustainable landscaping technique and showcases native plant species. The vegetated wall also provides insulation to the building, reducing the energy need to cool the school in the hotter months. The installation provides students an education in native species gardening and sustainable landscaping, as well as a lasting resource for the community to experience the same.

..............................

The GREENS Fund Award is a competitive grant given annually to a local high school to implement a campus project dedicated to sustainable development and environmental stewardship. The GREENS Fund Program is designed to encourage critical thinking and problem solving for some of today’s most pressing environmental issues and to foster a stronger environmental consciousness and sense of stewardship among youth and young adults. Winning projects foster educational opportunities for the students and serve as a lasting resource for the community.

The GREENS Fund is made possible by contributions from private donations and the support of people and organizations dedicated to environmental education and promoting awareness and knowledge of sustainability among the youth of today.

This year, the GREENS Fund is open to all high schools in the Berkley-Dorchester-Charleston Tri-County area. The GREENS Fund awards grants for campus projects that:

  • Address environmental conservation and preservation in an innovative way,

  • Provide learning opportunities for the community and students alike, and

  • Demonstrate environmental stewardship and sustainable development.
