Living Roofs, Inc. installed a green wall at the James Island Charter High School in April 2008. The system chosen was a “green façade” which consists of a cable trellis structure which provides vertical support for three different species of vines; Bignonia capreolata (Cross vine), Gelsemium sempervirens (Carolina Jessamine), and Lonicera sempervirens (Coral honeysuckle). The species were chosen in order to combine deciduous and evergreen species, as well as to provide food and nectar for various birds, butterflies, and insects.
The green wall also provides numerous benefits to the public such as: aesthetic improvement, reduction in the urban heat island effect, and improved air quality. Although the green wall at the James Island Charter High School is on a smaller scale the above benefits are present, but may be limited. However, the green wall serves an important function as an educational and demonstration project.
Living Roofs, Inc. sole business is green roofs and green walls. We are committed to expanding upon the social, economic, and environmental benefits of green roofs and green walls. Living Roofs, Inc. is a design and installation company and is proud to participate in educational programs and demonstration projects to facilitate the public’s participation in greening their cities, communities, and neighborhoods.
