Jen Vaughn Hayes, principal of Vaughn Hayes Design, managed the installation of the Green Wall at James County High School. Jen helped the winning class specify the types and quantities of native trees, shrubs and flowers and helped arrange them for the installation. She also took extra time with the students to teach the basics of gardening, the value of native species gardening, and tips of planting. During the project design and implementation, Jen noted how excited she was to see the enthusiasm of the students as their project was translated from concept into reality.

While studying landscape architecture at University of California at Berkeley Extension, her eyes were opened to the importance of sustainable landscape design.  Since moving to Charleston in 2005, Jen has been a champion for sustainable landscaping in the Lowcountry. In her practice she focuses on using native plants that thrive in the local climate, taking advantage of what is on site, and choosing local and recycled material.  This philosophy creates the opportunity to reduce both her clients’ cost and their environmental impact, while providing quality designs that enrich people’s enjoyment of their outdoor spaces.

The Institute Staff would like to wholeheartedly thank Jennifer for her hard work, dedication and naturally beautiful spirit and everything that she gives so generously to the Institute. Thank you.
