The Sustainability Institute has performed approximately eight weatherizations this year. Our weatherizations typically include weather-stripping, air sealing and caulking to prevent conditioned air from leaking to the outside. On occasion, we are able to do a little extra depending on supplies donated and our volunteer team.
In late November, we received an email from Kate George, daughter to Hazel George, asking for assistance with her mother’s house. She remarked on the, $200-$300+ energy bills required to keep her mother's house warm over the winter and how with the current economic situation, it was getting to be too much. Inspired by Kate's story, the Institute answered. (Read Kate's Story here >>>)
This unique weatherization went above and beyond our normal routine of air sealing. We put a plea out to our constituents, businesses and affiliates to see if we could get the much-needed insulation for Hazel's attic and crawl space. The response was overwhelming. Not only did we have people donate funds to purchase insulation, but Lowes generously gave us a great deal on our needed supplies. In addition, Kate's neighbor brewed up fresh coffee with donuts for the volunteers on the day-of, while the Burns Down Neighborhood Association President, Vonie Gilreath, and the Blessed Sacrament Church donated pizzas, sandwiches for the volunteers. Yet we have to tip our hats to the most helpful people on the weatherization day to the FireHouse 10 Firefighters (our volunteers) who helped with all aspects of installation and provided lighthearted humor and camaraderie for everyone involved.
While we wait for the results of our insulation efforts, the experience of this weatherization was truly amazing. The coming together of individuals across a broad spectrum of backgrounds to assist one individual was in the utmost meaning of holiday spirit. Thank you to everyone involved.
The Institute will follow up with Kate in the ensuing winter months to determine how effective the insulation weatherization is. We will be happy to post results when they come in.
