Bryan Cordell

His Work: Using his expertise in nonprofit management and sustainability, Bryan has provided leadership to The Sustainability Institute as Executive Director since 2006. During that time, SI has become nationally recognized for its work in energy conservation training and outstanding 'green' workforce development efforts. In addition to directing the operations of The Sustainability Institute, Bryan dedicates his expertise and experience to help build the capacity of organizations focused on community sustainability. He served on the Board of Directors for the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) -- South Carolina Chapter from 2007 - 2010, serving as Chapter President in 2009. He served on USGBC's Southeast Regional Council (SERC) from 2008 - 2011 and currently chairs its Diversity Working Group. Previous Board appointments include the 113 Calhoun Street Foundation, Lowcountry Local First (a founding Board member), Family Services, Inc., and Plant A Row for the Hungry. Bryan was recognized with a "40 under 40" award from the Charleston Regional Business Journal in 2009.
Off hours: Bryan enjoys the Lowcountry beaches, kayaking and spending time with his rescue dogs.

Deborah Kaufman

Her Work: Deborah joins SI as our new 'Director of Development' after diverse experience in business development, project consulting, marketing and event strategies.  She started her career as a Client Analyst for Goldman Sachs and Co. with a securities license and later as a Chief Administrative Officer for Endeavor Marketing in NYC. She has served as a Project Consultant for the Lyndhurst Foundation in Chattanooga, TN and for clients here in Charleston including Middleton Place Foundation, The Sophia Institute and The Stoney Company.  She was also a Director of Development and Events for the Charleston Ballet Theatre.
Off Hours: Deborah is a certified yoga instructor and teaches in Charleston, enjoys stand up paddle board surf and serves on several non-profit committees.

Benjamin Leigh

Program Manager, Energy Programs

His Work: Manages the Institute’s Energy training programs which include the Pathways to a Green Economy (P2GE) program, the Institute's new Home Performance Guild, homeowner trainings, and advanced training for building professionals in the green industry.   The P2GE Program is a 'green jobs' program funded by the Department of Labor that trains veterans, at-risk youth, dislocated workers and others to become certified weatherization technicans and then offers job placement services. The Home Performance Guild is a program that provides workflow management, advanced training, quality assurance, and technical assistance to a network of home performance professionals. The Home Performance Guild currently also provides these services for the CharlestonWISE Program and manages the independent energy advocates and contractors working with the program.
Off Hours: All we know of Ben is that he disappears early on Wednesay to go "sailing"

Renee Patey

Her Work: The CharlestonWISE Impact project is a community-wide initiative and research component of the CharlestonWISE™ program. The project provides value and support for the growth and development of the CharlestonWISE™ program through data collection, community outreach, market analysis and workforce development.The Green Cities Initative works with communities, businesses and local government to promote programs that emphasize sustainabilty.  Two major successes under this initiative include working with the City of North Charleston to develop a strategic plan for investing more than $1 million in ARRA funding on citywide efficiency projects and working with the Charleston Green Committee to develop and write the Charleston Green Plan.
Off Hours: A native of Charleston, Renee enjoys the luxuries of the coast – a good day at the beach, a barefoot lifestyle and great seafood cuisine.

Jay Bell

His Work: Through the Energy Conservation Corp he is helping young Americans to help their communities: hands-on experience in the green building field by providing energy efficient improvements for deserving homes. Jay learned to love the roar of power tools and sustainable/smart building practices - his experience ranges from solar installations to rainwater harvesting systems - many years ago. He is also co-owner of Solar Hot Water…Works! and Elemental Design Group, LLC.
Off Hours: Jay and his wife are living proof that almost anyone can be urban chicken farmers.

Lawrence Bratton

"Green" Job Coach for the Pathways to a Green Economy program

His Work: Larry is the "Green" Job Coach for the Pathways to a Green Economy program; a Department of Labor program between The Sustainability Institute, Trident Technical College, and Trident One Stop. Larry hopes to offer pathways to economic self sufficiency for disadvantaged populations through effective recruitment, training and job placement services in the energy efficiency and renewable energy industries. Previously, Larry served as Director of Development for the Low Country Civic Justice Corps (LCJC), a prisoner re-entry program whose purpose was to impact recidivism. For LCJC, Larry promoted life-long changes by incorporating job training and personal development skills that created a more stable foundation for ex-offenders when released into society. Larry is actively involved in community organizations such Breaking Down Barriers and Assedi inc. He Serves as volunteer chaplain in the Charleston County Detention center and serves as Chaplain at the Lieber correction facility (exodus weekend). Larry is also a member of the Greater Charleston Area Hospitals for Pastoral Care and serves as a Pastor of Bibleway Baptist church. Larry mentors youths in the Charleston area and was formerly Known as "Dr. Toys" to "Happy Days and Special Times" organization for children with disabilities. He is involved with outreach to the Horizon Elder care facility where he serves as Chaplain and hosts a weekly radio show called "Awake" which airs Sunday mornings 9am-930 on station 99.7 FM.

Maggie Burghoff

Her Work: Maggie works as the Institute's office manager and bookkeeper. She also plays an integral role in grant management and reporting.
Off Hours: Maggie enjoys time with her dog, Gracie, playing tennis and the great weather in Charleston. Although a native of St. Louis, she has called Charleston home for the past 20 years.

Betsy Kleinfelder

Her Work: Betsy is the Local Project Coordinator for the Sustainable Cities Institute and helps coordinate the CharlestonWISE Impact Project, the research component of the CharlestonWISE program.  She is responsible for the intentional learning component of the program, which documents the lessons the team learns as the program is developed so that CharlestonWISE can run to the best of its' ability and that any other city can replicate a similar energy efficiency program.  Betsy also uses her background in Historic Preservation to coordinate the development of a BPI BA Continuing Education curriculum to give local energy advocates and weatherization contractors the skills needed to work on Charleston's historic buildings.
Off Hours: Betsy spends her free time enjoying live local music, using her city tour guide licence to teach local history to anyone who will listen and sampling delicious Lowcountry cuisine.

Conan Gibson

His Work: He is the Job Site Supervisor working with the North Charleston community to create more efficient homes and reduce energy costs. Conan has worked in the field of Urban Planning as a consultant, specializing in Urban Design, Innovative Coding and Geographic Information Systems. 
Off Hours: Conan enjoys fishing and taking his dog to the beach’ and when time allows-escaping to the mountains to hike and camp. 

Laura Addis

Her Work: Laura works as a freelance web/graphic designer and marketing consulatant. With a passion for both design and the environment, she utilizes her skills to create design solutions that produce less waste, less negative impact on the environment and that are of more value to the stakeholders.
Off Hours: Laura and her husband, Les, welcomed the newest addition to their family, Irelyn Marie, in March 2010. Needless to say that consumes much of her "free time." She also enjoys drinking Allagash beer and searching out a good music venue.
